DIABETES AWARENESS

Written by: Lion Chico Rivera, Chair, West
Happy New Year, fellow Lions! Now that we have enjoyed the goodies of the past holidays, it is time to deal with the consequences of indulgence of our favorite foods and drinks.

The first thing we should do at the beginning of a new year is to have our annual physical exam. If you get in the habit of doing it every January, you will never forget when your next one is due.

Next, we need to start on a good diet. Balanced meals are a must for every-body, especially for diabetics. All that rich food of the holidays is behind us and now we have a whole year to get ready for the next one.

Next is the most dreaded and of which we hear the most excuses for not doing:EXERCISE! For one reason or another, we always find an excuse for not doing them. Do you know that a minimum of 20-30 minutes walking, 3 or more times a week, is the easiest of exerciese to accomplish? If you do it by yourself, great! But you will quit as soon as you can find an excuse not to do it. I recommend you get a companion (husband, wife, family member, friend) and commit yourselves to do these walks. Try not to make excuses or accept any excuses for not doing your exercises when planned.

You must remember that excuses only satisfy the person who gives them.
Here is a list of excues I have received for not doing exercises:

* I am too tired.

* I am too busy.

* It is too hot.

* It is too cold.

* I have not time today.

* My car ran out of gas.(???)

* I am waiting for ________________.

* My companion does not want to go today.

* I need to do laundry.

* My favorite program is comming on TV.

* I forgot.

* My children need a bath.

* I need to take a bath.

* Nobody reminded me.

* It's too boring.

* I am hungry.

Next time you feel like making an excuse, just pick a number and you will save time and words.
You may want to print and clip this list and place it on your refrigerator door.

IMPORTANT NOTE:

Before you start a program of exercises, you should consult your doctor.
